What is Medicare Part A?

Medicare Part A: is designed to assist with the costs of your hospital stays, including in critical access hospitals, skilled nursing facilities (excluding custodial or long-term care), hospice care, and certain home health care services. Eligibility for these benefits is subject to specific conditions.

Coverage:

  • Inpatient care in a hospital
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Nursing home care (inpatient care in a skilled nursing facility that’s not custodial or long-term care)
  • Hospice care
  • Home health care

Cost: most individuals are exempt from paying a monthly premium (referred to as a premium) for Part A. This exemption is typically applicable to those who, or whose spouse, have contributed to Medicare taxes during their employment years. However, if you, or your spouse, haven’t paid Medicare taxes and are aged 65 or older, there may be an option to purchase Part A coverage.
